|Plantronics Gamecom X95 Headset Review|
GoozerNation recently received a set of Plantronics GameCom X95 gaming headphones. This headset works exclusively with the Xbox 360. This is my first experience with a headset built exclusively for a game console. In the past, I’ve used a regular set of headphones that plugged into my surround sound unit. They worked well enough, but they didn’t have a mic to talk to fellow gamers. They were also wired, which proved to be a pain over the long haul. I’ve also used the headset and mic that came with my Xbox when I first bought it. They worked well enough for talking to other people online, but they didn’t provide the game audio. I’ve never bought a dedicated gaming headset before simply due to cost. I’ve seen some headsets that run well over $200.
Plantronics is currently offering the GameCom X95 for $99.99. You can buy them from Amazon for $56.23. But be careful if you shop on Amazon because they are also listed for $95.48 and $99.99, and they all appear to be the same model. Go figure. Here's a link to the $56.23 version: Plantronics Gamecom X95.
Before you buy them, you probably want to know how well they work. I’ve tested them on two nights so far and I have a good sense as to the quality of the headset. To get started, the set up is extremely easy. The GameCom X95 uses two AAA batteries that fit in one of ears. You connect the wireless module to the 360 and the right and left audio plugs act as a splicer to the plugs you have going into your TV. This way, the volume control is independent for the headphones and the TV, i.e., you can mute the TV and still hear volume over the headphones. The wireless module has a master volume dial on it and the headphones have separate volume controls on the ears. There are separate volume levels for chat and for game audio. The headset itself plugs into the controller and then you pair them like you would with any headset. The GameCom X95 is wireless in that there are no wires running between you and the 360.
