Core Blaster Review (PlayStation Mini)

One of the great things about PlayStation Minis is that they are always there to entertain you when you want to game, but you don’t want a full-blown adventure. Well, the new Core Blaster by Ringzero has been recently added to my collection. The mini costs only $3.99 and is compatible with both the PS3 and PSP. Sweet!
Core Blaster is definitely a strategic mini. Your job is to place blasters in certain locations to blast cores. It all makes sense now doesn’t it? Each blaster costs money, and you get money for destroying so many cores. To make it harder, different waves are different colors, and colored cores can only be destroyed by the same colored blaster. Therefore, management is required. You may even have to sell your other blasters to place a colored one to keep your goal safe. If too many cores get into your goal, you lose. Also, your rank goes down depending on how many get through to your goal.
You would think that a lot can’t be said about a mini; after all, it’s a mini. However, this one has a lot more to it than other minis like, oh say, Tetris. There are many levels and three different difficulties to choose from, and each is very different. You may find yourself getting so close to an “A” rank, but then a single core slips by. The game certainly takes patience on some of the trickier levels, but the mental payoff is great.
Although I described the basics of the game, I didn’t describe the more advanced parts, and believe me, it gets crazier. In addition to all of this, some of the paths are colored like some of the different cores. Those are paths that the matching colored cores must follow. Although this is helpful in letting you know where to place blasters, mixed in with the fact that they tell you what color the next couple of waves are ahead of time, it still may cause you to sacrifice other blasters, which you will hate to do. They’ll give you about as much money as GameStop would give you for a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots: Not much.
All in all, Core Blaster is a great addition to the PlayStation Store and more than worth every penny. If I had to call out a con in the game it would be the music. While it is tolerable, it isn’t very good. However, if it bothers you that much just listen to your iPod as you game. Problem solved and the deal is far from broken.
Ringzero made a great first appearance on the PlayStation Store and I hope to be here reviewing future titles I’m sure they will be dishing out. So what are you waiting for? Go pick up a new PlayStation Mini right now!
