Shadows of the Damned Review

sotdShadows of the Damned might be one of the best games you may have missed this last year. Grasshopper Manufacture has done an excellent job. DMD is the perfect mesh of survival horror and action combined with crude humor. Think Resident Evil 4 meets 2010's Dante’s Inferno.

Gamers play as Garcia Hotspur, a demon hunter who’s girlfriend Paula has been kidnapped by Demons and drug down to hell. Garcia and Johnson his, witty and perverted sidekick head down to battle demons and reach the head Demon’s castle and save Paula. The game is pretty linear but there are upgrades and collectibles along the way. Nothing beats blasting demons with a shotgun.

Most of the puzzles involve moving Garcia or the environment from light to dark. Stay too long in the darkness and you’ll quickly die. Dark enemies can’t be defeated until the darkness is driven away by shooting a goat head lamp which floods the surrounding area with light. The other puzzles involve moving floors and walls. Nothing like tracking down bits of brains and strawberries to feed the heads of babies who unlock doors for Garcia. The game likes to challenge gamers here and there whether its trying to slog through darkness and avoid swarms of enemies, fighting relentless bosses, or avoiding the grasp of a doppelganger version of Paula who pursues you endlessly.

shadowsI had a blast tearing through levels with the weapons. The bosses are unique and some of them will require games to think outside the box. The story is entertaining and the end has a few surprising twists. There are plenty of checkpoints so gamers don't have to repeat large areas.

The graphics are good. Hell is a very nasty place and Grasshopper Manufacture has spared no details with this drab and dark world. Although Dante’s version of Hell was a little more colorful. The humor is another great selling point of the game. There is a lot of dialogue between Garcia and Johnson with lots of references to certain parts of the body. This keeps the game light hearted. Not only does the game have a lot of adult language, there are a lot of mature situations and graphic scenes. You’ve been warned, this game is not for the faint of heart or small children.

The entire time I was playing I couldn’t put this game down. I was hooked from the first five minutes to the end. If you like action games with a survival horror twist then this is the game for you. Best of all most stores have it less then $30 by now.
