Science fiction games have always been one of my favorite types of games. When I first heard about Deep Black: Reloaded and how it’s a sci-fi shooter with underwater battles, I just had to give it a try.
Deep Black Genre
Deep Black: Reloaded is a sci-fi third person shooter created by Biart Company LLC, an independent developer of multiplatform video games. The official release of the game is scheduled for March 1, 2012.
Deep Black Story
Deep Black takes place in the year 2047 where mega-corporations, such as Ishiguro-Himmel Systems (IHS), have replaced governments. Natural resources are running low, and countries are working together to fight for survival. One set of countries have formed to become the United Federation of Gondwana. Another set of countries have formed into an organization called the Global Strategic Alliance (GSA). With the recent discovery of a new biological weapon, organizations struggle with the fight for world domination.
Deep Black Gameplay
Deep Black: Reloaded will have 40 single player missions and a multiplayer mode. The game has a cover system and is played similar to other games that use this system. The player can take cover behind objects and blind fire or aim and shoot. There is no manual saving in the game as it auto saves with checkpoints. Like other shooters, you have firearms as your main weapons. In this game, you also have a harpoon that is used for pulling enemies toward you and for reprogramming droids and panels. I also saw a symbol for what looked like grenades, but there didn’t seem to be any in the demo.
Deep Black Tutorial
The Deep Black demo starts out with a tutorial that teaches the basic controls and features of the game. Upon moving forward, I was immediately annoyed that my character automatically sprints after pressing down the forward key long enough. Upon doing so, the field of view changes, and it changes back once the forward key is released. It was starting to give me a headache. Luckily this only happens out of the water. After making some progress in the tutorial, I was at a point where I had to reprogram a drone. Due to there being no checkpoints in the tutorial, and the fact that the drone can kill in a few hits, it took me three times of restarting from the beginning before I was finally able to reprogram it successfully.
Deep Black Campaign
The campaign starts with a fully voiced cutscene that talks a little about who you are and what’s going on. After progressing through the level a bit, I found out that there are interactive cutscenes, the ones where you have to press a certain button when it appears.
So far, it seems to only happen when you are involved in a melee attack, but I generally don’t like those kinds of cutscenes. Luckily, you only have to press one button and it keeps replaying until you get it right.
Another thing I noticed is that the level seemed really repetitive. You use your harpoon to open a gate, climb up and find a button to raise the water level, fight some guys, swim to the next section and do the same thing. This process happened several times in the demo before it got to somewhere where I thought it would change, but then the demo ended.
The underwater parts were awesome, but every time I was out of the water, I felt the need to get back in. For a game that is based on underwater combat, you seem to spend a good amount of time out of the water. I hope the full version of the game really is mostly underwater.
