The demo for Mass Effect 3 was released recently and being a fan of the first two, I just had to try it. Below are my thoughts of the demo, along with a bit about the new features and gameplay.
Mass Effect 3 Main Menu
The main menu looked very similar to the main menu of Mass Effect 2 in that it is on a terminal on the left, and news from Electronic Arts is on a terminal on the right. After selecting to start the single-player demo, the next screen was a nice surprise.
A new feature for Mass Effect 3 is the ability to choose your play style, and I don’t mean different classes. You may choose between Action, Role Playing, or Story.
If you’re more of the action type where you just want to get directly into the game and shoot stuff up, then this option is for you. With this option you will not get to enter a name, customize your character, nor choose a class. As you gain levels, your character’s and squad’s powers are chosen automatically. Conversations also play as cutscenes and you are not given dialogue choices.
For Role Playing, you can enter a name, customize your character’s face, choose a class, and psychological profile. You may distribute points from leveling up manually or click the auto level up button for the game to select powers automatically. Conversations play like normal and you are given dialogue options. Like the previous Mass Effect games, your character has a reputation. Good choices will raise your Paragon level, and evil or bad choices will raise your Renegade level.
For Story, it is similar to Role Playing, but the difficulty is set to the easiest (Narrative), and your character and squad levels up automatically.
All of these options, probably with the exception of Action, can be changed through the options later. If you choose Action, you skip the entire character customization phase, so I don’t believe you can go back to that later. Also, regardless of which option you choose, bypassing doors were automatic. I’m not sure if this was because it’s just the demo, or if manual bypassing is really gone.
Mass Effect 3 Classes
The classes are pretty much the same as Mass Effect 2. There are the choices between Soldier (balanced combat class), Infiltrator (focuses on stealth), Vanguard (close combat), Sentinel (tank type with advanced shields), Adept (uses mostly powers instead of firearms), and Engineer (uses drones and are able to disable enemies). The Soldier is pretty much the class I always play first for my first playthrough because it’s the most balanced for combat. Afterwards, it’s nice to play again as the other classes.
Mass Effect 3 Significant Combat Loss
When starting a new game without importing from Mass Effect 1 or 2, you get to choose between three different pasts, in terms of story. These options are Numerous, Kaidan Alenko, and Ashley Williams. For Numerous, the story will go off of Shepard losing many squadmates and friends. The other two are spoilers if you haven’t played through the first Mass Effect.
---SPOILER WARNING---
If you select Kaidan Alenko, the story will go off of him dying instead of Ashley in Mass Effect 1.
If you select Ashley Williams, they story will go off of her dying instead of Kaidan in Mass Effect 1.
