Jetpack Joyride Review for iOS

The Apple marketplace is full of great games. Who has the time to play them all? Recently Jetpack Joyride, which is normally $0.99, was free so I decided to give it a shot. After a few hours of play, I have to say this game is right behind Angry Birds as being some of the most fun I’ve had with an iOS game. The concept is simple, tap the screen to keep Barry Steakfries up in the air and try to collect as many coins as possible. Sounds simple, you’ll have to dodge lasers, missiles, and electric ropes. As the levels progress the game throws more and more at you with tighter and tighter spaces. There are vehicles along the way that serve as power ups. Nothing like the “Crazy Freaking Teleporter” to mix things up. Two of my favorites are the gravity suit and the motorcycle. After you die, there is a chance to take a spin with the slot machine. You could win double coins, or a revive which would throw you right back into the game.
There are goals in each play through which might include getting a certain number of coins, sliding a certain number of meters, or missing X number of missiles. And in the end you can take the coins you get and spend them. Some of the items are cosmetic and Barry gets new clothes. Others are second chances meaning gamers can play longer. Probably the best and most expensive are permanent upgrades to the vehicles. You can also use real money to purchase some of the upgrades.
Halfbrick has done an amazing job with the game. Jetpack Joyride is universal, meaning it will play on almost every iOS device except for the original iPod Touch and the original iPhone. In the end the best part of the game is that its simple and anyone can pick up and play. The sounds and music are catchy. The graphics are colorful. There is a decent rewards system, and the game doesn’t run like garbage on a iPhone 3G. What else does this iOS game need? If you haven’t picked it up for $0.99 it is well worth your time.
