Triple TownThis article is part of a continuing series that looks at match three games. Last time we looked at Combine, a match three game that introduced the idea of having matches not disappear altogether, but combining into a higher level brick type.  Today we look at Triple Town, which is very different, but does include this same idea of building up higher level structures from low level blocks through combination.  Triple Town, which is also on Facebook and Google+, follows the freemium model which raises some interesting questions about the future of mobile games.

combineCombine is the anomaly in a hard core gamer's life.  First of all, Combine is the ultimate in social gaming in that it only exists on the Facebook and iOS platforms.  Second, my girlfriend introduced it to me, when usually that happens the other way around.  Match three games had apparently reached the peak of their evolution in games like Bejeweled 3 and Puzzle Quest, but Combine has pulled me back in.

Tiny Tower_Promo1The three person studio, NimbleBit, has created a cute homage to games such as SimTower, while incorporating many of the addiction mechanics present in most Facebook games.  While it does borrow from many different games, the art style and lack of pushiness to share with friends or buy "Bux" make it really endearing.  Zynga, the evil Emperor of social gaming, has taken notice and is on the path to producing its own clone named Dream Heights.  At what point does re-imagining and iterating become blatant theft?

mzl.ycvxxqmg.320x480-75What does Pixel Studio -- the single-man studio behind the indie sensation Cave Story -- do for an encore?  The answer is Azarashi, a super simple game, out now for the iPod, iPhone and iPad.  In contrast to Cave Story, which hides pretty well the fact that it was made by one man behind it's depth of story and gameplay as well as polished visuals, Azarashi is very plainly a simple production.
