When the sequel is better then the original

Most of the time when games get a sequel there might not be any changes to the core game. The sequel is a chance for the developer to improve or change some of the unsuccessful elements from the first game and to improve on a series’ greatness. Gamers cannot look into the future until we observe the past, or something like that. I like Silent Hill 1, but Silent Hill 2 blew me away. This is where I think the series really took off. Better graphics, atmosphere, and a better story. I was sold on Konami’s survival horror.
Resident Evil is another story; most of the time as the sequels come out they get better and better. The biggest improvement was from Resident Evil 3 to Resident Evil 4. First, the series jumped from PlayStation 1 to Gamecube and then PS2. The game looked better, the story was different, and the game was good enough for most fans to play through several times. For myself as a gamer this was one of the biggest improvements in a series of games.
More recently, gamers have experienced the greatness known as Uncharted 2. Don’t get me wrong, Uncharted 1 is a must have. But number 2 added multi player, co-op, and more of Nathan Drake.
Dead Space 2 is another great example, not only is the second game longer, it is more disturbing, and the added multi player makes the second game far better than the first game.
Some gamers may disagree with this but I found that Mass Effect 2 was better than the first game. Although Bioware dumbed down some of the RPG elements and made it more action oriented I found myself sucked into Mass Effect 2 a little more then Mass Effect 1. At least the ending didn’t leave gamers hanging this time.
Who can argue about this? Starcraft II is far better then Starcraft. Although gamers had to wait 10 years the sequel was well worth the wait. Blizzard improved the game play, the online play, and made the story much longer.
Two other games I thought were better then their previous games were Black Ops over Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood over Assassin’s Creed 2. In regards to Black Ops, after MW2, where do you take the series? Let’s roll back the clock to the 1960s, add the beloved zombies back in, and focus on a crazy conspiracy. You know what? All of this worked in Activision’s favor.
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood is a great game. It took everything I disliked about the second game and fixed them. No more just depending on parrying to take down enemies, now Ezio had some offense. Along with the added multi player, the challenge missions, and the lengthy story it is going to be tough to top this game.
Well fellow gamers, are there titles out there in a series of games where you thought the sequel was far better then the original? Some people have said Gears of War is a great example or even the Halo series.
