PS3 vs 360 Year to Date: Who is Ruling 2011?
Written by Troy Benedict Sunday, 11 September 2011 05:00

The holiday season is quickly approaching, and a lot of great games have been released since the beginning of 2011, but compartively, how well are the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 doing? Who has the higher reviews? Who has the most exclusives? And which of system has better-reviewed exclusives?
I was interested to see just how each system was doing in terms of review scores, and did a little sleuthing of my own. Combined with a lot of data filtering, sorting, and comparing using things like “VLOOKUPs” and “pivot tables” I came up with the following statistics.
These scores are based on review compilations gathered from MetaCritic.com on the morning of September 8, 2011.
Games Released and Reviewed in 2011 (as of 9/8/2011):
PS3: 164 titles with a 86.6% Average Review Score
Xbox 360: 155 titles with a 86.1% Average Review Score
The PlayStation 3 edges out the Xbox 360 by half of a percent in terms of overall reviews.
Number of Exclusives/Non-Exclusives Titles:
PS3:
Multiplatform: 103 with a 68.5% Average Review Score
Exclusive: 61 with a 68.6% Average Review Score
Xbox 360:
Multiplatform: 103 with a 68.5% Average Review Score
Exclusive: 52 with a 67.3% Average Review Score
While multiplatform titles averaged out to be pretty much the same for both systems, the PlayStation 3’s exclusive titles had just over a 1% advantage over the Xbox 360’s.

Games like Dragon Age II were better reviewed on the PlayStation 3, while games like Dead Space 2 -- surprisingly -- had a slightly better review score on the Xbox 360 even though the PlayStation 3 included the Move-Compatible Dead Space: Extraction as a free extra bonus.
Final Take:
While it is hard to declare either system a victor in terms of the quality of games that have been released to date since the beginning of the year, the PlayStation 3 did edge out the Xbox 360 by a slight margin.
It wasn’t all that obvious earlier in the year, but the PlayStation 3 certainly had more retail-based exclusives, while the Xbox 360 heavily relied on exclusive titles released on the Xbox Live Marketplace in the form of XBLA titles.
In terms of multiplatform content, each system’s top 10 titles were very similar with Portal 2 and Dead Space 2 being the two best-received titles this year.
There are still more than 3 months left in the year, so it's anybody's game (no pun intended) at this point. Each system has a handful of exclusive titles still to be released during the holiday season, plus it'll be interesting to see which games -- Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3 -- is the better reviewed game and if there are any differences in the two console versions.
I'll try and run another comparison in early 2012 to see which system performed better overall.
