The Final Fantasy Challenge. Part 3 and 1/2: I got lost in the Hall of Giants....twice.
Written by Josh Hurley Sunday, 19 February 2012 06:00

This is Part 3 in my attempt to play every single Final Fantasy game. Now with more pictures than the last 2 entries combined! (Spread out over 2 entries due to size.)
When I last left off, I was in Melmond after being horrible with pictures. I've been getting better about it.
Quick heads up: Some parts (for example, me going through a floor with no major problems or events happening) will be omitted. But not due to writer incompetence this time! It's quite the opposite in fact. An extreme amount of images and text will be going into the next two posts. That's right, two posts. We're moving up in the world or something, and The Final Fantasy Challenge is going to be updating twice a week now! So, assuming this is posted on Sunday, the next scheduled update is Wednesday. Then Sunday, then so on.
Anyway, back to Melmond. After buying whatever upgrades and magic and anything else a virtual knight and company would ever want, it's time to get down to business.
First, to go west to the Giant's Cave!
Hey, I said I took more pictures. I didn't say anything about good pictures.
Continuing in the cave, we get to this...uh...thing. (Do stone monsters have genders?)
Everyone is allowed one Lord of The Rings comment about this. Better? Good. We'll be back here later. For now, we go south to the Cavern of Earth. (Previously known as the Terra Cavern).
This cavern/dungeon/whatever you want to call it isn't hard, as it is long.
Oh, when you are on the first floor, don't take the left path like I did. Here's why:
This is called the Hall of Giants or the Hall of Gigas, depending on whichever version you're playing. Why is it called that? Well...
They crank the encounter rate up to 11. Oh, and it's the same enemies, over and over. Take a step, start a fight. Take a step, start a fight. Take a step, start a fight. Turn the page, wash your hands. Take a step, start a fight. You take a step, you start a fight. I inadvertently went down this hall...twice. Not exactly proud of that accomplishment. Anyway, after haphazardly looking for the bottom of this area, we finally come to the boss room.
After quick saving (fun fact: I restarted this cavern on 4 different occasions. All 4 times were due to one of my characters getting turned to stone right before the end of a fight, throwing off my teams level and experience being equal. I have no idea why this is such a big deal to me, but it is.) we prepare for the boss. Now, being far underground what do you think the boss for this part would be? A giant mutated worm? Morlocks? Mole people? None of those sadly. Try a vampire.
No one tell him about Chrono Trigger.
I was actually able to get a screenshot of the boss fight this time. It also is the first boss fight of the game that went more than one round. (It went two.)
Oh, that random treasure chest in the corner? It holds the Star Ruby, which helps continue our story. More on that in a minute.
A giant stone with a hole in it is covering the entrance to lower levels of the Cavern. We need the Earth Staff to get it. Now back to the Star Ruby. What does the Star Ruby do you ask? Does it unlock something? Does it magically turn into the Earth Rod, or even the Earth Crystal? Does it have any actual physical use? Well...no. It actually makes the first part of the Earth Cavern feel really redundant.
It's a snack for Stoney McRockperson. The first part of the Earth Cavern is essentially a food run so you can get past the giant anthropomorphic rock, so we can go get the Earth Rod. I wonder if we could have gotten the walking, talking boulder to move if we had asked nicely. Anyway...
We essentially break into this poor guys house demanding that he help us out. The best part of this? He does.
And with rod in hand (hur hur hur) I feel like this is a good point to end this half of the update. Next time, we go even deeper into the Earth Cavern, and whatever else Final Fantasy has to throw at us.
