Shepard's Story Ends After Mass Effect 3

It's been announced that Commander Shepard's story is over after Mass Effect 3.
In an interview with PC Gamer, BioWare’s Ray Mazyka, CEO of Bioware stated, “After this, Commander Shepard’s story is complete.”
What does that mean for the Mass Effect franchise? Even though there may be more Mass Effect games, Commander Shepard will have no part in them. This news wasn't totally out of the blue. Ray has stated many times that Mass Effect was a trilogy.
However, it looks like the Mass Effect universe still has more stories to tell. I assume if BioWare decides to make another game set in the Mass Effect universe, it will be similar to how they made Dragon Age 2, in that it will be in the same universe but with new characters.
The Mass Effect universe is full of potential stories, and even though we're sad to see Shepard go, we can be excited to find out about new heroes in the universe.
