Is the 3DS Worthwhile For Hardcore Gamers?

How many people do you know that play exclusively on consoles like the PS3 or 360? I know many, and they aren’t sold on the 3DS idea. That having been said, I have some friends who are obsessed with Nintendo and they love the new system. However, when push comes to shove, does the 3DS deserve a shot by complete hardcore gamers? For example, the Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, and Splinter Cell fans that would hate to pass up a new game in the series, even if it isn’t a big adventure on a disc?
I am stuck in the middle of the 3DS. I have seen it firsthand thanks to some friends, and I was impressed. However, $250 for one? I don’t know. I would prefer to spend the big bucks on a home console. And $250 for a handheld made by Nintendo? Don’t get me wrong, I love Nintendo. Mario, Link, and Samus are all great, but Nintendo always seems to miss out on all of the good mature games. Is the 3DS changing this? There is an impressive amount of mature games coming out for it that I never would have expected to be exclusive for a Nintendo console.
I think that a new Metal Gear game is reason enough for me to pick up a 3DS at some point. Splinter Cell and Resident Evil are just boosting this thought, in addition to the many other great titles that seem to be coming soon for the 3DS. At the same time, it seems like Nintendo may not need so many of these titles to be a big hit with their new console. After all, the DS went without Metal Gear and Splinter Cell, and it did just fine. Although, it seemed to primarily be a child’s toy to stay quiet with Mario in the car, on a plane, or on the school bus.
Will Nintendo start to be taken more seriously by stronger parts of the gaming audience with this new console? Perhaps they will even be recognized for something other than slapping a new gimmick onto gaming systems. I hope to see Nintendo succeed greatly with the 3DS, and then from here on out maybe even they will start to change with the times and get more hardcore games in the future, and design newer consoles for the majority of the gaming audience.
What do all of you think? Have you picked up a 3DS or do you plan on getting one? If so, when? And why? What is the major reason you want to add it to your collection of game consoles? Sound off below in the comments!
