Marvel vs. Capcom 3 DLC: Jill and Shuma Gorath

PDFPrintE-mail

It's now been a month since Marvel vs. Capcom hit store shelves. If you bought the Collector's Edition package, you received a code for two downloadable characters: Jill and Shuma Gorath. If you just got the regular edition, you can now get them for 400 points a pop. Are they worth it? Read on to find out!!

One of my favorite parts of MvC3 so far is the flashback feel I get playing some of my favorite characters from #2. Shuma-Gorath feels like he was cut and pasted from the second game. The control scheme changed mildly between the two, but after a few seconds, I found myself playing him almost identically to his original form. He has his cheap six-hit strong attack, the eyeball throws, and even his supers look very, VERY familiar. If you enjoyed playing as him in the second game, getting him is a no-brainer.

Jill, on the other hand, surprised me. I was a big fan of Resident Evil all the way through #3, but I fell out of the series. Just too many good games out there worth playing, and I had to make a sacrifice. Jill in MvC2 was VERY fun to me, I enjoyed her intentionally bad voice acting and attacks that were more like enemies chasing her and getting her opponents. I have learned, though, that (primarily in RE5) Jill has changed. Without spoiling that particular game for anyone who hasn't played it yet, Jill is now much more of a close-combat fighter. She is far flung from how I remember her, and to me feels like a completely different character (and from what I've read on the internet, it is for good reason). I miss the old Jill.

So should you, the non-special edition player get them? I think it boils down to how much online play you do, because a LOT of people are going to download them, which means in the end you are going to face them, and probably going to want them. If you don't care much about online play, but love MvC2, Shuma will be great, but Jill may leave you missing her old form. But then again, you are going to find yourself with a gaping hole on your character select list.

But are they worth 400 points? 5 dollars? In #2, there were more characters. Many are actually complaining at the shortcomings in #3, but one could counter that many characters seemed identical to play in #2. Each character in #3 adds a different dimension to play. Jill and Shuma Gorath continue that tradition. Each character is a completely different way to play. I recommend picking up both. After all, if you bought this game, you are a fan of both companies, and therefore will want them anyways.

On a side note, there are two more things available now: Shadow Mode DLC and a Costume Pack. The Shadow Mode DLC is free, and is basically specialized AI from people involved in the creation of the game. Seems obvious to download that.

The costume pack has extra outfits for Ryu, Iron Man, Captain America, Dante, Chris, and Thor. At 400 points, it boils down to how much you care for aesthetics. While I haven't downloaded it yet, it seems a bit much to ask $5 for different outfits to me. That's just my two cents....or my five bucks.

So get out there, upgrade your game, and fight on! For the Fate of Two Worlds!
