JimmyJames70 Starts to Exercise

It's been almost a month since we last posted a Fit to Game article, and while people weren't exactly bashing down the door asking for more updates, you're gonna get one anyway. Why, you ask, am I insisting on the continuation of this column? Because I believe it has true merit behind it. After all, gamers are still sometimes haunted by the notion that all of us are fat lazy slobs or little kids or senior citizens playing Wii bowling. For example, if you do a Google Image Search for "Video Gamer," this guy is in the top row of results.

Uh huh. That guy. Now, just how many of you really resemble that guy? The fact is, and I know this is true because I've read it on Ars Technica more than once, that the majority of people playing video games in America are in their 30s, they are married and have a full-time job. In other words, they are respectable and contributing members of society...and they should at least try and keep fit and healthy.

This brings me around to the Fit to Game series on GoozerNation. This is a column that I'm going to start participating in. Last week, my brother loaned me his Kinect and a copy of Your Shape Fitness Evolved to go along with it. And now I'm hooked. The first morning I fired the game up, I went through the personalization tutorial, and set up my own cardio program. I would have done strength building, but I sold all my hand weights a couple of years ago. I'm now kicking myself for doing so. I had a pretty great collection that I sold for 50% off retail value. The guy who bought them from me was ecstatic to pick them up cause buying weights ain't cheap.

Anyway, after a full week of doing the cardio workouts, they have proven beneficial. I now set my alarm for 6 AM and get a good half hour work out in before the kids wake up and start asking for breakfast. Doing a cardio routine in the early morning helps get the heart started and gets you energized for a full day. For the first few days, Fitness Evolved had me doing deep squats. They don't feel like much when you're doing them, but by late that afternoon, after sitting at my desk all day, my hamstrings tightened up and I was a bit sore. Needless to say, it's a good idea to stretch before you start to exercise.

After a few days of the same routine, I eventually graduated from Beginner to Medium, and that introduced a whole new set of exercises. And now my arms are flailing, my legs are kicking and I'm all over the place. Luckily, Fitness Evolved provides great tutorials and helpful suggestions while you're working out; which is great help to get you back on track.

So, how did I do after a week of working out? I gained a pound. I know. Kinda sucks, huh? But, part of losing weight includes diet as well. Now I have to cut out the fried eggs, apple fritters and pizza. I'm not discouraged in the least. I know that I just started and the routines are just now picking up the pace. It's going to pay off in the long run to start off slowly.

And, yeah, I'll probably start building up my free weight collection again. Men's Health suggests working out with 5 lb weights while doing the cardio routines, so that will be a good place to start.

Just a personal note to anyone following me: There hasn't been an update on my Fit to Game series for a month for good reason: the birh of my new son! It's been busy, and I wrote a few other articles, but haven't put the time into this one. Rest assured, though, the plight continues! Look for an update from me (hopefully, given I get enough sleep) sometime this next week!
