Sony’s Fallen Giant

Erik Kubik shares this sad moment about his PS3. My ps3 died this last Monday, right in the middle of some Red Faction Guerrilla multiplayer. The 60 GB system that loved me for the past 2 ½ years croaked. My console and I had been through thick and thin.

On that horrifying night, 30 minutes into the game my ps3 suddenly shut down, which I thought was slightly unusual. I powered the system back up, it ran for 5 minutes, beeped, and then shut down while briefly flashing a yellow light and then started flashing a red light before I powered it off completely. From my initial research on the Internet, I would say the power supply or one of the fans went bad. How can this happen? I kept my ps3 in a well ventilated area and I never used the system for more than three hours at a time.

Overall, two and a half years is a good run for a system. My regular Xbox broke after a year and a half. I sold my Dreamcast and Gamecube after a year and they never broke down on me.

I noticed about three months ago the fans on the system were working really hard. I thought to myself at the time that I should back up my saved games. Why didn’t I do that…?

Now, I come home from work and instead of relaxing with the ps3, I attempt to watch TV or play the Wii or DS; it’s just not the same. I find myself getting bored and thinking about the ps3. Now it sits in the corner, an ominous black coffin at the edge of a slow and painful death, having gasped its last breath earlier. I have a feeling the broken console is mocking me and my despair.

I purchased my ps3 in August of 2007 so the warranty is long expired. I do have a few options though. I could pay Sony $189 dollars to fix it and receive a three-month warranty. Sony would have my black coffin for a week to two weeks. I would receive either a refurbished console or my original one. None of my data from the hard drives would be saved. I could pay a third-party repair service around $100 and they promise to save all my data and have it back to me in three days. They offer a 30-day guarantee. Based on recommendations and their feedback they appear to be legitimate and stand behind their work. Or I could save some out-of-pocket money and sell it on eBay for parts; broken 60 gb ps3’s seem to fetch $130-$150.

My biggest concern is losing the data. I have 40+ hours dumped into some of the games. Games like Fallout 3 and its DLC, Resident Evil 5, infamous and Uncharted 2. The only saving grace in losing this data is that I could clean out my game collection and trade the titles I no longer play on Goozex.

My final option is to try and pinpoint the issue and fix it myself. If it’s the fan or the power supply, those can be purchased online for $30-$50. There are plenty of videos that demonstrate the fixes. However, I run the risk of completely breaking it and wasting my time.

If I decide to get rid of it, I think it’s time I went to my local GS, use some saved up trade-in credit, and pick up a 120 gb slim.

I have a feeling my ps3 was giving me some sort of sign. Like it was telling me that I play too many video games and that I need to cut back a bit. Or maybe it was that I should have acted on the warning signs from four months ago when it started dying.

My last option is to jump on the 360 bandwagon.

Sucks ur ps3 failed. Here is an idea for you... Find someone else who has a ps3 fat, take out your hard drive and plug it in to your buddy's ps3. Copy all of your saved games/ sensitive data. Plug it back into the ps3, and sell it on ebay for 130$. Buy a new ps3 slim for 300... You will be getting a new system for 170$, and ull get to keep all of your stuff. Sounds sexy, no?

Can't take your HDD out to get data off. As soon as it goes in another PS3 it asks to reformat it. Cannot switch drives. Better idea...check craigslist. In Vancouver, BC there is a guy who I went to. $80 for any PS3 fix. 99.9% can be fixed unless it is a mobo failure. He gives you a 1 year warranty on all of his work. 1/2 the price of Sony repair and 4x the warranty. Gotta love CL.

Get your PS3 HDD and adapt to those USB HDD adapters, plug it unto your friend's PS3 USB. The HDD will be read as a storage media. The rest is easy.

Firstly always backup your data on a external hardrive,i bought the original in march 2007 so it will be 4 years old next march i use mine 2 to 3 hours every day and its still going strong so your giant just had bad luck mines still standing tall, now wheres my axe time to chop down that bean stalk fee fi fo fum.

I feel your pain. Lost my 60GB a month ago after 4 years I went out and bought a slim. I tried to plug the HD from the 60GB into the slim, but the drive was toast. I'm still trying to decide what to do with my 60GB.

Well, i don't know what to say, except "sucks for you"...I bought my PS3 on launch day from Best Buy in Toronto, and have had absolutely no problems since....i've got a bunch of saves too, but i dont care much for them since all my trophies are synced up (10 platinums...im not braggin). And really i doubt all those games u stated are half finished....so as long as ur trophies are synced up you really have nothing to lose because all the stuff you payed for on PSN can be bought again for free using your'e existing account on any other PS3. So really you've got very little to lose. But one option you should completely throw out the window is buying a 360...because if you do that you would be purchasing a console that is inferior in every conceivable way!! Also it is a bad idea coz the 360 has the worst exclusive line up ever for 2011, with only Gears 3 serving as good one...but even that is not guaranteed. Ps3 will be getting Resistance 3, R&C: All4one, LBP2, inFAMOUS2, to name a few...

It's always nice when a fan-boy mongoloid spouts out his opinion as fact. Having both PS3 and a 360, I can easily say that you, sir, are nothing more than a fallacious talker.

Are you aware how similar the 360 and PS3 really are? Are you aware that there's multiplatform games that the 360 manages to run better than the PS3?

Not to mention out of all the PS3 exclusives you named, there's only two that are unique and scream "Buy a PS3 solely because I'm awesome!", those being LBP2 and Infamous2.

I can never get over you fanboy scum. PS3 turds like yourself always play the "PS3 is better cuz its bluray" card, and 360 fanboys always use the "our online is 5x better than PSN!".

What ever happened to liking games solely because they're good, and not what system they're on? The 360, Wii, and PS3 all have their flaws, but are all great at something with great exclusives for each.

Same happened to me - I ignored the warning signs too. Found out too late that you can transfer - (not copy, but transfer everything including protected saves) if you can get it to run again. The re-flow fixes work. I just went too far with mine in trying to get the fan speed back down and now it's truly dead. $202.50 to have it repaired by sony and my data rescued. That's too much. Picked up a move bundle instead. If only I'd settled for 'working with a loud fan', I could have transferred and saved the hundreds of hours of gaming worth of saves. -But then of course, if it was working I never would have considered buying a new slim. Thank Vishnu my PS2 still works, but I still miss BC on my slim.

You can get it fixed at certain repair places but I only recommend it to back up your data or to move your data to a new PS3. You've invested all this time and money into trophies, save files and games, just move it over using the move function instead of backing it up onto an external storage device so you can keep ALL your data. Repair jobs, in my experience, only provide temporary fixes that can last only days or weeks, so buy a new PS3, move the data and move on.
Also, it makes zero sense to buy a 360 because then you're scrapping all your games as well which means you lose way way more than the cost of a new console. at 60 bucks each if you had 20 games that's 1200 dollars in sunk costs that you'd be losing. Forget gamestop or EB games or microplay, they'll give you pennies for your games. 20 bucks is the most you'll get on a trade in 3 get it free deal.

Happened to me, and I thought all was lost. The fact you heard it getting louder and louder in it's recent time alive, points to the standard overheating and solder fail. The power supply failure is more rare, and there is only ONE fan, so if you heard it, then it's working. If you are fairly competent with your hands and electronics, I would totally recommend re-flowing the motherboard using the Gilksy videos on youtube. He explain it all step by step, and if done properly, you'll be back in business in no time. I highly recommend using the no-clean flux method he explains. It should fix it for another 3 years or more. I also recommend buying a high quality thermal compound to replace the old.

+3 # JahRasta 2010-10-29 16:27
It is my theory that above all else, the thermal compund sony uses, dires out and essentially stops conducting heat around 2-three years. You'll see what I mean when you go to remove the old stuff. Brittle as all get out. Anyhow. Good luck... my launch 60gb, has been up and running as quiet as it was new for awhile now since performing a thorough re-flow. check gilksy out here: http://www.youtube.com/user/gilksy1#p/u/9/MZRReDIHTe0

for me its the bluray laser that died on me. i could still play ps2 and dvds and could access everything else. so i did my backup removed my 500gig hd and put the original back in and there it went to sonys fix it up place.

only took one week. i had mass effect pc to work on anyway

this happened right after buying a move controler and ps3 sports as well, how to train your dragon.

my ps3 was reletivly old too. about 3 years. used the crap out of it and transported it everywhere." im on a 3G connection" and the data plan is a joke.

for me its all about the look and all the extra features the 60 gigs came with. no way i was getting a new ps3.

-1 # PP 2010-10-29 16:37
I don't see the point in buying a 360 since it has no exclusive games, last - gen graphics, crap online and a wonky controller that only noobs use. Just get a new PS3, if you get a 360 you can't play ANY games like Uncharted, Gran Turismo, LittleBigPlanet , Killzone, Infamous, God Of War, Heavy Rain, Demon's Souls, Motorstorm, Resistance, White Knight Chronicles, Folklore, Heavenly Sword, Rathet & Clank, Yakuza, Wipeout, The Agent, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Metal Gear Solid 4 or The Last Guardian.

Why have a console that can't play any games? That's just stupid.

-1 # CJ 2010-10-29 17:04
ever thought about removing your HDD where all your save games are stored?

-1 # Sam Clark 2010-10-29 17:05
Hi, I had the exact same problem. Took it to one of the shops that say they repair it for cheap, paid £50 got it back the next day. It ran perfectly for about 3 months but has since died again :( I think I will be getting a slim for Christmas. But like you, I haven't backed up my saves... which is stupid as it had died once already... :(

I do have a 360 to bide the time when my ps3 is out of action or for a bit of FORZA while I wait for GT5, but as this is rare it barely gets played... But even this is now not an option as it has got the RROD :'(

You can Resurrect your PS3 back to life. I repaired 2 PS3's with just using a heat gun. You can buy them under $30. There are steps you can find on youtube. IF you don't want to lose all those Data you have, this is your best Option.

-1 # Erik Kubik 2010-10-29 18:44
I thought about trying the heat gun option I also looked into getting fixed by a 3rd party. Ultimately something like this teaches you to backup your data!

# erw 2010-10-29 20:03
go get a 360, have fun with all the exclusives *snickers*

-1 # nac2603 2010-10-29 21:26
Here you go. One of the sides on your PS3 there is a cover labeled for the HDD take that off with a slotted screwdriver and take out the HDD. Sell your 60GB 'Phat' PS3 and the do the same on one of the new slim PS3s pull out the HDD and put your 60GB HDD in the new PS3 since they all use the standard 2.5" HDDs. And Problem solved you a a new working PS3 plus all of your saves!! :)

Similar thing happened to me. Bought my baby on launch day, all good until Apr 2010 - called Sony who sent out an original, back compatible PS3 for £120. Delivery 2 days. In that time, I took the hard drive out, plugged into my pc & copied game saves etc - No problem.
PS3 arrived, I restored all saved all info via USB transfers - again no problem. Warranty on this machine was 3 months
Subscribed to Playstation+ in Jun, then in Aug - same green freeze screen of death! I called Sony & told them what happened.
Despite being out of warranty, they sent me another original PS3 - FREE OF CHARGE & AGAIN WITHIN 2 DAYS!
Sony behaved with honour to replace the second unit - They were really sympathetic about my situation (I did explain that I was a launch day customer, had bought around 25 titles & upgraded to Playstation Plus, which I guess they checked via my account details).
That's my story!

feel for you. We all know that we should back up our data but how often do we really do this. You cannot take a hard drive from one ps3 and just pop it into another and expect to find the game save info, a ps3 hard drive is locked to the ps3 it was formatted on. You can take out your hard drive a put it into another ps3 but the system will immediatly ask to format the drive. The best way i have found to keep the ps3 running is to have it stood upright (hot air rises and the heat output vents on the side of the ps3 are now at the top and thus heat is removed quicker), clean all vents at least once a month, take the system apart every year (after the warentee has run out) clean inside and apply new good quality thermal paiste to the cpu and gpu. My original 60gb (well 500gb now) system is wisper silent and still working fine even for its age.

-3 # Buy a 360 2010-10-30 02:10
Just buy an Xbox360... it ALWAYS has the best multi-platform games. With multi-platform games the Xbox360 dominates the ps3 on frame rate, texture resolution, screen resolution, model/environment detail, post processing and it ALWAYS runs better at 1080p. The online play is ALWAYS better on the 360 without question. Xbox Live Arcade just owns the psn for games. Plenty of ps3 exclusive game makers are jumping ship to the Xbox360...
Konami & Hideo Kojima, Square Enix, Ninja Theory, Namco (Tekken), Koei, Insomniac Games and the list will continue to grow throughout 2011.

psmove is a pretty damn lame wiimote ripoff, and it hasn't sold very well in the US. It's just NOT a novel experience, we've been playing it for 4 years now. Kinect will be selling Xbox360's by the millions this Xmas... the psmove is going to get owned badly and so will the ps3. As for exclusives there's one title I'd feel envious about, UC3. But there's NOT ONE GAME WORTH BUYING A PS3 FOR... NOT ONE

# jenzien 2010-10-30 03:44
Just get a ps3 slim they run much cooler and quieter, my ps3 fatty nearly died on me last year lucky for me I got rid before it was too late

Finally ps3 reliability >> x360 reliability, I have heard horror stories of people getting more than one RROD in a year before the x360s came out (mainly release x360 consoles), you are much better off with ps3.

# Agent75 2010-10-30 05:44
No console in the history of gaming will ever beat the failure rate of the Xbox 360. I've got a slim model and it's nearly as loud as the old model, more so when playing racing games. The PS3 failure rate is extremely low compared to the failure rate of the Xbox 360 (hands down). The Xbox 360 is still selling well even though the build quality is very poor, so it's all down to the games when it comes to console sales. Anyone who's looking to buy an Xbox 360 (the new model), they sound quiet when you turn them on, but they're soon ready for take off after a few weeks of game playing. Be warned! I'm not a fanboy, but when it comes to the games, I think the Xbox 360 has the upper hand when it comes to the games (I also own a PS3 and a Wii).

Go to gophermods, they fix PS3's for $70, you keep all your save data, and it works. I recommend going this route. Oh, and you can pay a little more and get a larger harddrive too! I personally had my PS3 sent in because of a defective wifi card (a service not on their website I believe, but I know they have it in their store) and got it back within a week. If you need to have it fixed, go that route. It's more than worth the money.

# Yama 2010-10-30 10:02
If you can pick up a heat gun and some thermal paste, I'd recommend watching Gilksy's YouTube YLoD repair tutorial.

If your fans were running loud before it died, the GPU or CPU were probably overheating (the factory thermal paste dries out over time, reducing its heat transferring properties).

Resurrect your PS3 and copy any game saves and files you want. Copy directly; backups are only usable by the console they were made on. Same with the HDD data on the drive itself.

Keep in mind that the solder reflow technique is NOT permanent.

Once you have your important data, you can either sell your PS3 or pay SCE the repair/service fee and in all likelihood, you'll receive a refurbished unit. Basically reconditioned to factory specs in a new case.
