Two Announcements from Nintendo: They are done with consoles and Mario is getting a makeover

mario xboxNintendo is getting out of the console business. Nintendo’s President has recently announced  Nintendo is finished with making home consoles. The Wii U is going to be shelved and Nintendo will continue to manufacture handheld gaming systems and make games for other consoles.

The President of Nintendo has quoted, “It’s just not worth it for us to make consoles anymore. We realized that outside of the handheld market, gamers want more than Nintendo can provide.” Fans all over the world are weeping and prices for used and new Wii’s have shot through the roof. Fans are worried Nintendo will stop supporting the Wii and remove everything from the Wii Channel. Nintendo has no comment about this.

With such negative news on the Nintendo front, there was one good thing to come out of this entire mess. Mario is getting a mature makeover. Nintendo has announced they will bring the plumber to the 360 and PS3 this fall. His first mature title will be called The Fall of the Mushroom Kingdom.

mario at war2Nintendo has stated that hardcore gamers are finally getting their wish. Mario will no longer be a happy plumber, instead he’ll be a grizzled and battered veteran from several Mushroom Kingdom Wars. The game will showcase Mario from a 3rd person perspective. Mario will be using a shotgun to take down zombified goombas, turtles, shy guys, and other minions in the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario will say such classic one liners as “It’s time to mop the floor with Bowser,”  and “Its payback Toad!”  The game will feature 30 levels, as Mario strives to clean up what’s left of the Mushroom Kingdom following the great war and more recently, after Bowser unleashed the T-Virus which killed Luigi. Expect to see a few Tyrants, an infected Bowser, and a host of other unsavory characters. Shotguns, rocket launchers, throwing knives, fireballs, oversized hammers, and Tanooki Suits all make an appearance to aid Mario in this final quest.

mario 4 deadFans of classic Nintendo may be a little disappointed but hardcore gamers are already praising Nintendo for taking their games in new directions. The game will include multiplayer and co-op options where players can play as Mario, a zombified Luigi, Waluigi, Bowser Jr, Wario, the Princess, Toad, and other classic characters. Rumor has it there will be guest appearances from Duke Nukem and Link. Day one DLC will include multi costumes, classic skins, and new weapons. If gamers pre-order at Gamestop they will receive exclusive power ups and Link’s sword. Amazon’s pre-order bonuses include 10 different Mario costumes. Nintendo has announced all of this will be available as DLC eventually. Personally I cannot wait to see what Mario does with a shotgun.

And...Happy April Fools Day.
