When I first heard of Dead Space, I was a tad bit skeptical. This was the first time EA released a horror game so I kind of just said ok let see how this one goes. After an hour or two of playing it all the skepticism was thrown right out the window and I found myself with one of the scariest survival horror games of all time, and a near perfect one at that.
Graphics and sound: 5/5The first thing that made this game really stand out from the pack of survival horror games was the sound, just the music scared the eyes out of my skull, when you heard the music go faster you know the poops going to hit the fan. Another fantastic sound were the monsters themselves and the environment around you, the crash of the ventilation shafts with a monster coming out of it would scare just about any one. The second thing that also made this standout was of course the amazing graphics. During the game you are treated to beautiful vistas of planets. The inside of the Ishimora is another beauty in the game, the blood on the walls, each room that's supposed to be themed actually looks the way it's supposed to. The monsters are also another thing of awesome graphic design. Each design gives them a true identity and the look each monster has can scare you. Last but not least the survivors are just as beautiful when you watch them! The image is just beautiful and each character's facial expression and superb voice acting for each one gives you a real sense of how hard the makers worked on each part of the game.
Gameplay: 4.5/5The first thing to be said is if anyone enjoyed Resident Evil 4 or 5 they are going to enjoy this; or anyone who's a fan of third person shooters. The shooting is slick and the only downside is the absence of the holy quick turn, but other than that minor gripe, I still had a fun time. The gun designs are pretty fantastic and make them really fun to use. Issac's gained ability such as telekinesis and stasis are a blast as well. My absolute favorite part that anyone would enjoy has to be the enemy AI, they just come at you like a berzerker, you might think I'll just blow its head off and it's over, not even close, Oh then I'll go for the legs, nope these aliens can crawl. Which leads me to the limb destroying aspect of the gameplay, which I think is one of the most fantastic game designs I have ever played, it truly makes you feel the fear of, "Oh man these things just will not stop until I am dead." Another little gripe had to be the backtracking to parts of the Ishimora you were already at, but it doesn't really hurt the game overall that much.
Story: 5/5There's only one in a few games that you actually find a story that's awesome. A crew is sent out to a mining ship called the Ishimura on a routine problem but once the crew finds out there is something worse going on all hell breaks loose and as Issac is a miner you have to help your crew and yourself get out alive and also look for your wife who is still possibly alive on this ship. The story pulls you in and the twists and turns are just well placed. It's just amazing. I don't want to spoil anything so I'll let you the gamer find out for yourselves, and the ending is quite possibly the scariest ending I have ever witnessed in my life.
Overall: 4.9/5If you haven't played it, your truly missing out on something absolutely amazing.
