Faceez - DSiWare Review

Faceez is a DSiWare photo application exclusively available for the Nintendo DSi, and can be purchased through the system's Nintendo DSi Shop utility for 200 Nintendo Points ($2 in North America).

Faceez, created by indie developer Neko Entertainment, allows the user to take portraits using the DSi's camera, and manipulate those photos by mixing, disguising, and animating them.

Mixing allows the user to take different facial aspects (eyes, nose, mouth, etc.) from two or more portraits and combine them into one headshot. Disguising allows the user to add accessories, like hats, glasses, and different hairdos to the portrait. The animating option puts the photograph on a stick figure's body and allows the user to animate it in many different ways.

Gaming enthusiasts and DSiWare skeptics will scoff at the idea of this application, as they should, because Faceez isn't intended for their demographic. As a father of a 3-year old boy who giggles incesantly when I help him take and manipulate photos using the Nintendo DSi's built-in camera application, I can see how Faceez would provide some fun for short periods at a time.

Is Faceez worth the $2? The answer certainly depends on the gaming lifestyle of the player. There is more value to Faceez than other equally-priced DSiWare applications, like the Animal Crossing Calculator and Clock programs. However, like many of the DSi's built-in applications, the experience is short-lived and everything in Faceez can be done in a matter of minutes. Small children and gamers who enjoy the DSi's built-in camera utility will probably appreciate the finer features of Faceez, but it certainly won't make a believer out any hardcore gaming enthusiasts.
