It's official! Xbox Live's Major Nelson confirmed via Twitter and his blog, at MajorNelson.com, that Xbox 360 owners can purchase a stand-alone 250GB hard drive at the cost of $129.99.
Previously, the only way to acquire a 250 HDD was to purchase a special edition console. Even the Xbox 360 Elite versions still come packaged with a 120 GB hard drive.
The price drop of the stand-alone hard drive seems to imply that a new Xbox Elite model might be just over the horizon. If you are doing the math, and have noticed the recent incentives to push current Xbox Elite bundles, the answer to this is a resounding affirmative.
The cost of a base level Xbox 360 Arcade is priced at $199.99. The 250 GB hard drive is an additional $129. The Xbox 360 Elite 120 GB is $299.99. At this point, the 120 GB Elite model is overpriced. A new standard SKU for the Xbox 360 Elite, packaged with the 250 GB hard drive is surely eminent.
A forthcoming Xbox 360 Elite 250 GB SKU can also explain why a lot of retailers, like Toys R Us and Amazon are having special deals on their current Xbox 360 Elite bundles, offering a $50 gift card for the purchase of a $299.99 120 GB Elites. Clear out the old stuff before releasing a new, larger model at the same price.
