ead Space 2 closed beta test has officially kicked off on the PS3 platform, and is already available for play. No information seems to exist at the moment as to how EA selected their candidates this time around, but since there were no actual sign-ups it's likely that EA just emailed registered EA.com users at random. Which as of right now I will assume that's how I got my code.
Speaking with some of the developers behind Dead Space they tipped me that the main purpose of the beta is geared more towards gathering up as much honest feedback as possible from gamers instead of any serious bug testing. From what I played I've had no issues and the multiplayer is actually really fun.
Teams are based on 4v4 and of course each match consist of two rounds. First round you either play as the humans or Necromorphs, then after that, you switch. Humans have one spawn point and that is their "HQ". On the other hand, Necromorphs have a spawn system that is very interesting and has you choose where you want to spawn through various "gates". Humans of course have to work together to get complete objectives which inevitable produces a "bomb" that when exploding wins the game. Necromorphs? Their objective is to get in the way and make sure this doesn't happen in the given time. As a Necromorph you can spawn as three different kinds, a fast, short range, strong baby looking thing; a mid range aggressive type that looks like the beginning of human centipede; finally, a small rodent if I say long range shooter. The later of the three was my favorite mostly because he climbs on walls and ceilings and is a pain to hit as a human. This is multiplayer experience that feels good and addicting. It's definitely not cheap and is very fresh from the usual CoD and BF.
Now I haven't even played the first game yet, but playing with this beta has really got me intrigued in the series and I plan on picking the first up sometime before early next year when the sequel hits store shelfs. Oh am I looking forward to it now.
Dead Space 2 should be out on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on January 25th, 2011, and is the first game in the series to bring survival style multiplayer into the mix.
