Anticipation for Splinter Cell: Conviction Builds

Back on November 2, 2008, I wrote the following on The Goozex Report, "The Tom Clancy titles never got the full respect they deserve from me. I've only played Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. I loved Splinter Cell and I cannot wait for the 2009 follow up. The game was a good change of pace after playing the CoD franchise religiously. On the other hand, GRAW was a bit difficult, but it was still fun to play, although I never finished the very last mission. I'll probably still play GRAW 2, but it might be sometime in the distant future."

It's now "sometime in the distant future" and I have played GRAW 2 and I liked it. It was more of the same from the original. It does not appear there will be a GRAW 3, but Ubisoft is currently promoting a different flavor of the game that focuses on stealth and some kind of new, futuristic camouflage. The latest trailer looks very promising. The game is called Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and I am looking forward to it.

I also still feel like the Tom Clancy titles are a welcome break from the CoD franchise. And these days, it's an even more welcome break considering all the fuss going on with Activision. The day might soon come when CoD games are a break from a Tom Clancy game, which brings me to Splinter Cell: Conviction.

Conviction releases on the 13th and the anticipation is building. The demo got mixed reviews, but for the most part, the fans enjoyed it and are hyped for the launch. I wrote back in 2008 that the game was to be available in 2009, well, it didn't quite work out that way. It's now 2010 but at least the game is around the corner. Fingers are crossed that the extra time spent working on the game is well worth it.

The hesitations for Conviction come in the form of the length of play and if they dumbed it down too much. I heard in an interview that the campaign will be roughly eight hours. The guys on the GoozCast have stated short campaigns like that don't bother them. If the campaign shows all the game has to offer in eight hours, then that's fine. Just don't make the game 16 hours and repeat a lot of the same game play. You might as well just play the campaign a second time.

While the Conviction demo did prove interesting it also showed that the game might have been dumbed down a bit too much. I'm referring to the fact that the game puts hints and directions on the walls and tells you where the objectives are. On the one hand, you'll never be lost; on the other hand all the mystery and guess work as to where to go next is gone. Hopefully, there will be an option to turn these hints off.

The hype for the game is the coop and the multiplayer. I'm sure those aspects of the game will prove to be addictive and compelling; provided the servers work and are stable. We will have to wait and see how that goes.

GoozerNation will have full reviews and gameplay videos in the coming days and weeks. Stay tuned.
