his just in, The Ball, a former Unreal Tournament 3 mod is set for release on Steam and in stores this Fall. The game was developed as part of the "Make Something Unreal" contest hosted by Epic. The game took home multiple awards from the contest. The Ball was also named Best Singleplay Mod of 2008 by ModDB MOTY 2008.
Tripwire Interactive will publish Teotl Studio's puzzle-adventure-FPS hybrid. Teipwire is the ideal publisher since their games Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 achieved commercial and critical success while their second game, Killing Floor, became one of the top 10 FPS' played in the world.
The Ball is going to be an interesting game. It's simple to pick up and play, which appeals to everyone, but it has some deep physics game play. Players will step into the shoes of an archeologist, who gets stuck in a volcano in Mexico seeking an ancient artifact known as the Ball. After the player acquires the Ball, they will learn from it, and the artifact becomes not only a puzzle solver but a weapon as well.
Sounds like an Indiana Jones adventure; it will be interesting to see how the game meshes FPS elements and puzzle adventure. Since most FPS games are known for fast action, The Ball could be a welcome edition for gamers. And although it only has eight levels, it also has a survival mode. As long as the price is decent, it sounds like The Ball could be very popular. Who knows, maybe it will be one of those name-your-own-price games?
The biggest item to reflect on is not The Ball itself but the idea of a mod going commercial. This is another example of someone's hard work and unique project paying off and the idea that indie games can still make a splash in the market.
