Red Dead Redemption First Impressions

Kubinator

May 20, 2010

Gamers have been waiting a long time for another good Western game. I've been waiting since the mid-1990s for a game that would do everything it set out to do. I can count on one hand the number of Western games released since 2002, and very few of them blew me away or had lasting appeal. Speaking of Western games, if gamers look back into the 90s, the amount of good Western games is still slim.

RedDeadRedemptionSide (16K) Within the first few hours I was hooked on Red Dead Redemption. The game successfully blends the elements gamers require in a well-developed Western game. There is a captivating and well-woven story, gun fights, and if gamers choose, there are plenty of random acts of violence to unleash on the townsfolk. The shooting elements mesh well with the horse riding, although learning the limits of the horse and controlling it may take some time getting used to. On that note, the only other gripe I have is the controls can be slightly inhibiting. Gamers are limited to R2/L2 for aiming and firing guns. I would prefer R1 and L1. But overall concerning Western games, it appears Rockstar nailed it.

Within a few hours of game play, I kept getting distracted by side missions like the bounty hunting and the poker games, elements that are essential to all great Western games and Western movies. Unlike the last free roaming game to grace gamers' consoles, Just Cause 2, the side missions do not feel like a distraction or a way to conceal the main game. However, I hope by the game's end gamers won't be sick of it, as other free-roaming games have turned stale and become uphill battles to the finish line. Let's hope that when we finish the game there is more to do than just the multiplayer. But for now, from what I've seen and played, it is going to be extremely difficult to put this game down and play anything else.
