Motion controls! Most average gamers shake their heads at the concept, "It's not hardcore enough," they cry. "Gaming used to be something that took skills, with motion controls the soccer mom can beat me."
It seems a few game developers have taken to the concept. Motion controls are popular, and it will certainly make companies money. So, why not jump on the bandwagon? Face it--motion controls are coming whether gamers like it or not, so just accept them. So what if every console is going the way of the Wii? Look at it this way, the Wii has consistently outsold every other console, until a few months ago. If I was a company CEO I'd like a piece of that.
Game Company A is going to follow the success of Company B. Here's a great example--Nintendo got smart and finally went to the disc-based format. Why waste money on cartridges when a company could put the money elsewhere? Motion controls are the same way--sort of. Invest the money into a successful trend to ultimately steal some of the market share.
Never mind the gimmicky feel or the been-there-done-that mentality. Here is the way gamers should look at the Natal and the Playstation Move. It's a way to get rid of their Wiis. It's one less console they will have to buy games for and one less console hooked up to the TV. Sell that freestanding white-box-of-joy and use the money to purchase something that matters, like more games for the 360 and PS3, which may or may not support motion controls.
Wait! What?! You are one of the few gamers who doesn't have a Wii? Are you living in the 19th century? Everyone has one these days, or at least that's what we're told! Your kids or your significant other haven't demanded that you fork over the money you were saving for the collector's edition of Grand Theft Auto V to buy the white-box-of-fun? Well, not owning a Wii just got better! Gamers of the 19th century unite! There is no need for you to get a Wii now! Blow everyone off and tell the kids they are not getting a Wii! They're getting the Natal and a new skateboard.
As gamers we know we can expect a plethora of shovel-ware titles with a sole purpose of making use of the motion controls. Get ready gamers, motion controls are coming and we have no choice but to join the masses in accepting their offering of mainstream gaming goodness. Although, I would prefer to use a Power Glove again...
