Medal of Honor Beta: It's Been Done Before

he Medal of Honor Beta is something most gamers are going to be disappointed in. If this is anything near the end product, EA has shot itself in the head. The game looks, sounds, and feels like a clone, or better yet, a bastardized version of Call of Duty 4. If EA had been smart they would have stayed with the roots of the game or better yet, gone where no gaming developer has dared to go--the Korean War.

Medal_of_Honor (12K) Medal of Honor's game play isn't terrible--Taliban forces vs. American forces. The weapons and classes work, but like the game's audio and visuals, they feel redundant. Don't get me wrong, it's great to emulate success: look at the Kinect and the Move emulating the Wii's successful motion controls.

The other issue Medal of Honor faces is timing. Call of Duty: Black Ops is due out less than a month after this game is shipped. Where do you think gamers are going to spend their money? What FPS war-themed video game are teenagers going to ask for come the winter holidays? Here is a hint--one of their first choices is a series that has over the years, consistently put out good games, which built on one another. The other choice, a game from a franchise that has been quiet since 2007, and their last two FPS games--MOH Vanguard and MOH Airborne--received a lukewarm reception.

Granted, I understand EA's shift in eras of warfare. WWII-themed games have become stale and with every successful war themed FPS taking place in modern times, it makes sense to try to grab a piece of the money. Ahh--but listen EA! There are other options! How about a Medal of Honor-type game from the Civil War or WWI? Think of the challenge of hand-to-hand combat, early tanks, horse Calvary, or front-line assaults with weapons from those eras!

As for gamers, we'll have to pick and choose. For gamers on a budget, $60 is a lot to spend on a mediocre game. Go with the series you feel you'll enjoy more. I'm sure both games will get DLC in a few months after they are released. If you can wait, the price of both games will drop and/or be readily available on Goozex. Until that happens, there is a cheaper option with an active community: it's called Call of Duty 4.
