I

t's that time of year again! Before the summer dwindles down to an end, the good people at id Software bring another firework-fashion summer finale with QuakeCon! For those unaware, QuakeCon is North America's largest LAN party. But there's more to it than that and we'll go over those things as fast as your eyes can read. The official registration started today with BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) and exhibit registrations starting out at 9am with scheduled events ending at 8:30pm. Of course, gamers will be playing well into the night.

Opening day broken down

Depending on what one wants to do, applicants either started gaming in the BYOC hall or went into the exhibit hall to loot all of the amazing vendors in Supermarket Sweep-fashion. Sponsors range from Nvidia to Antec, and Alienware, as well as others. Each sponsor booth has gear pertaining to their company, and most gave away dozens of swag throughout the day. These giveaways will be occurring throughout the week. On top of this, there were plenty of games to play including Bethesda and Splash Damage's BRINK, Fallout: New Vegas, and more.

Throughout the day, attendees that were tired of walking around found solace for their little piggies by kicking back and playing online in an area provided for those who forget their computers. Then, after several raffles were through, the "id welcome" from Todd Hollenshead began...

News

Todd Hollenshead, co-owner and CEO of id Software, began by introducing the event and welcoming everyone. He then mentioned that Zenimax, parent of id Software, had recently acquired French developer, Arkane Studios. But that's just one part of QuakeCon news. The real reason to go to the event is to get a first glimpse of id Software's Rage, being demonstrated tomorrow afternoon.

Why aren't you here?

So what if you don't want to lug around your rig that you spent more on than your car. QuakeCon is one of the best free events of the summer, and you'll have plenty to do. Come check out new games, new gear. Come get some free stuff, and come make some friends while you're at it. If you're in the area, or are close, and have the chance, QuakeCon is definitely an event that any serious gamer cannot go without attending. If anything, there's always next year!
