Top 5 Comic Relief Video Game Characters

There has always been video game characters that try so hard to be funny but fall on their faces. However, there also are some great characters who manage to get a laugh out of us often. Let's recognize five of the best examples of comic relief in video games!

5: Eddie Riggs (Brutal Legend)

Whether you're laughing at him or with him, it's hard to deny that Jack Black is a funny guy. Would Brutal Legend have been anything without Jack Black? I say, of course not. His work in movies proves that he earned the spot of star-of-the-game. Anyone ever heard of a small movie called, School of Rock? You don't have to like rock and roll to love that movie, but come on, who doesn't like rock?

4: Brucie Kibbutz (Grand Theft Auto IV)

Oh Brucie, Brucie, Brucie. There were plenty of funny characters from the Grand Theft Auto games, but I went with you overall. Did I really like you in the game? Not that much, but that doesn't change the fact that you got me to laugh plenty of times. How many games can pull off a hilarious steroid-pumped homie...don't answer that... Besides, calling you out now is the least I can do to pay you back for all of those helicopter rides!

3: Private George Haggard Jr. (Battlefield: Bad Company 1 and 2)

This was a pretty tough decision. Bad Company is just as much about comedy as it is about fighting. This having been said, I could have put the entire team down for the number three spot, but Sarge--as the leader--is much more serious when compared to the rest of the team. As for Marlowe, he doesn't talk as much since he's your character, and he too, takes things more seriously. Why list Haggard and Sweetwater, half of the team, when one can easily be picked? Way to go Haggard, you crazy hillbilly! I'll never forget the time in Bad Company when you ruined Sarge's fishing trip one day before he was free by doing one of the stupidest things I have ever seen in a video game. Bravo.

2: Johnny Sasaki (Metal Gear Solid series)

Johnny, you did good and came close, but no number one for you. Athough he is a great source of comic relief, there can only be one, but we'll get to that later. For now, let's talk about Johnny. Johnny's last name came from a staff member of Kojima Productions who was always slacking off, Hideki Sasaki. Johnny is always having his diarrhea attacks to make his character as mockable as possible. Let's face it, we'll never forget the scene in Metal Gear Solid 4 where he was doing his business in a drum can and an enemy discovered him. However, later in the game, he did take on a much more serious role, and fight like few have ever fought before.

1: Daxter (Jak and Daxter, Jak II-III, Jak X, The lost frontier, and Daxter)

Could there be a different number 1? If it weren't for all of his jokes, we'd forget Daxter was there. In my opinion, Daxter did his best in Jak II, you can't help but laugh as some little ferret-like animal hits on a hot chick in a bar. And then how he takes credit for Jak's work and then screams in the face of danger. Everybody loved Daxter so much he got his own game on the PSP and I find it to be one of the best games on the system. I hope a sequel gets announced!

Are there characters I left out, of course? These are only five characters from five different games. Maybe you agree with my list, maybe you don't, but I'm sure that these guys have brought back plenty of memories for you guys in your gaming. If not, go and buy or rent some of these titles and see what I mean!

Tonight (April 27), after 9PM PDT, the new Halo Reach, "Birth of a Spartan" live-action short will premiere. See it here.
