t is an epic battle; a tale oft told in days of old and those yet to come. Demons against angels, hell against heaven, evil battling good. The book, "One Land, One King" by Y.S. Hassan tells just such a tale, but it is not the same old story. In the land of Hassan's tale, rulers are connected to their people by psychic bonds, and angels and demons are a part of daily life.

one-land-one-king (28K) In the One Land, the land itself chooses it's rulers, by giving them the ability to channel or focus "will." Using this will, the knights and kings can command the elements, communicate with their people, and sense threats. In a world of many kings, the land has decreed that there can be only one. Each king commands five knights, who in turn rule their lands under the direction of their king. For many years, wars have been waged and battles fought, all in the quest to find the one, true king. As the final battle between the last remaining kings and their knights is waged, the people take comfort in the thought that when it is over, peace will finally prevail.

As the triumphant king slays his opponent, however, he is whisked away to a place of nothingness, and told of a coming war that will rival all those previously fought. It is war not of the people, but for their very souls. And so before the rejoicing has even begun, the new One King and his knights are plunged into a fight for the survival of the land and all they hold dear. A child has been born, and it is he who will ultimately decide the fate of their kingdom.

"One Land, One King" is a fantastic blend of mythology and fantasy, and one that fans of both genres will appreciate. Y.S. Hassan has done an incredible job of blending likeable characters and believable dialogue with elements of magic, folkore and his own distinct style. The story is engaging and well-told, and not at all predictable. I thoroughly recommend "One Land, One King" to fans of fantasy, fans of mythology, and fans of genuine good read.
