MahJong. If that word sends shivers down your spine and your fingers inching towards the nearest electronics, then boy do I have the game for you. (For those of you who have never heard of Mahjong: What?!? How can you not know what mahjong is? I fear for our society!)
Similar to mahjong, Shisen-Sho is a Japanese tile game based on the simple premise of matching two tiles. In mahjong, the tiles are stacked in various configurations and you can only match tiles that have an open side. Shisen-sho is a bit different, though. The tiles are all on one level, generally forming a single, large rectangle. Tiles can be matched if you can connect them with a maximum of three lines (yes, there will be lots of fingerprints on your screen till you get the hang of it). Once tiles are matched, they disappear--the object being to eliminate all the tiles for a win. The game is timed as well, the better to lord your awesome times over whoever is unfortunate enough to be in the room with you.
Shisen-sho is great for people who love
puzzle games, but also great for card players as it has a bit of a solitaire vibe to it. It also has great mileage, as there are truly endless
combinations of tiles. I know what you're thinking: "But Amy, how could I possibly get such an awesome, perfect in every way, fantastic game for
free?" Two words for you: open source.
Wait! Come back! Don't let those words scare you away. Open source isn't just for Linux-only computers (and what's wrong with Linux anyway?). In fact, shisen-sho is one of the only things that can get me to abandon my MacBook to wrestle my husband's dual-boot laptop from his clutching grasp. That's right--dual boot. That means it can run Windows and Ubuntu. However, if you actually needed that explanation, dual boot may be a bit out of your current grasp. One option is to marry a computer guy (worked for me!). Don't worry if that doesn't work out for you though (all the good ones are taken), cause I got you covered. Check out SourceForge.Net to download an open source version for Windows. You're welcome.
