f you like being screamed at and called an idiot by a 60-something Jewish New Yorker in jeans and a sportcoat (and let's be honest here--who doesn't?!?), then get yourself tickets for Lewis Black's new comedy tour right now, idiot! Sigh, it's just not the same when I do it (come back, Lewis!). Lewis Black is most famous as the host of "The Root of All Evil" and for his "Back In Black" segment on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. (Writer's Note: If you do not know who Lewis Black is, you are no longer allowed to read my articles).
Lewis Black is well-known for his acerbic wit and his habit of screaming at his audience. Part of what makes his comedy shows so enjoyable are his obvious intelligence and grasp of current issues. Sure, he may be hurling insults and screaming obscenities while he discusses taxing the rich and health care reform, but everything he says makes perfect sense. Bravo to him for helping us to laugh at the swirling cesspool that is currently our economy. His show covered virtually every current hot button topic: from legalizing pot to abortion to that pesky little oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The In God We Rust Tour is making its way across the heart of the nation right now. And the $35-$95 you spend on your ticket will be money well spent. My husband laughed so hard it literally gave him a headache. (Pro tip: Don't bring along anyone with an annoying laugh. Sooo wanted to deck the guy behind me and not everyone has my admirable restraint.) Lewis Black has a riveting stage presence that makes you feel like he's talking (screaming?) right to you and the time that he spends on stage literally flies by. Between Lewis and his opening act, the show lasts around two hours. Lewis Black has a very distinctive comedy style that is definitely not for everyone. Sunday School teachers, spinster librarians, your grandma, etc. may find his style to be a bit, well, profane. (Unless your grandma likes obscenities and pot, in which case--bring her over!)
I caught the show (it's contagious!) in Bismarck, North Dakota, but from here it goes to Minnesota and then on to California, Quebec, and beyond. You can check out the tour calendar and get ticket info at LewisBlack.com. What are you waiting for? Go buy tickets, idiots!
