adeez aaand Gentlemen! Are you reeeeady for the match of the century? Today we present a fight to the death between mortal enemies in the event of our time. In this corner, we have the reigning champion, sucking our time and cash since the late 1800s: MOOOVIEES! And in this corner, we have our challenger, hopping onto the cash/time suck scene in the late 1950s but rapidly overtaking a large share of the market: VIIIIDDEEEOO GAAAMES!

deathmatch (19K) Which one is the greatest? Who will reign supreme as THE best source of entertainment? As the reigning champ, Movies seems to have an advantage as a longtime part of American culture, but...wait...Video Games has just thrown the first punch--the time factor. No doubt about it, you get way more playtime out of even bad video games than most movies. Even short video games tend to run more than five hours, and the average is closer to 8 to 10 hours. Sure, you can replay your movies, but the same can be said about your video games. Wow! A hard right to the solar plexus.

Oooh! Movies took that punch hard, but came right back up swinging, hitting Video Games where it hurts with sticker shock. Ouch! While your average dvd/blu-ray can cost anywhere from $5 to $30, a new video game often costs $60 and more! Sales and deals aside, those movies are definitely cheaper--and video games goes down! IS this it, folks? Has movies defeated its nemesis in the fight for your cash?

WAIT! Video games have struggled to its feet behind the prematurely celebrating Movies--OH! NO! HE's got a chair! WATCH OU...Ooooh! Video Games have smashed Movies over the head with variety. Movies may have its DVD players, its Blu-Ray, and even the old VHS, but it is no match for the sheer number of video game systems available. XBox, Playstation, Atari, PC...don't even get started on listing all the handhelds. You can play Video Games on big discs, little discs, large cartridges and postage stamp sized squares, even systems pre-loaded with one or several games. No matter how you want to play it, there's a video game out there for you.

Wow, what a tough match! Movies tries to throw Video Games with the convenience of digital download--but Video Games pushes back with its own downloadable titles, and then tries to sneak in a jab with loyalty. Oh, yeah--no doubt player fans are loyal, but Movies has some super-fans up its sleeve as well. Who will prevail? Both fighters are tired, dripping blood from gaping wounds inflicted in the ring. Can they continue? What's that? Is Video Games calling for his Mommy?

No! Video Games have climbed up on the ropes! Movies is struggling to crawl away as Video Games leaps onto Movies with his patented "home release" move. That's right--he pulled out the home release! Once Video Games are released, any consumer can purchase them and play them immediately (or as soon as they cough up the cash, anyway). Not so for the hapless Movie fans, who must trek to the theater to pay exorbitant prices to watch their show amidst ringing cell phones and horny teenagers, only to trudge home at the evening without so much as a copy to replay. I don't think Movies can recover from that hit--yes, we have confirmation. That is Movies' spleen in the center ring.

WE HAVE A WINNER! Challenger and new World Entertainment Champ--Video Games!
